After the great flood, the Bible gives us the account of the tower at Babel.
Followed by the life story of a man called Abram.
Abram was married to Sarai, they had no children, but had adopted their nephew Lot. Abram lived with his father in the city of Ur.
God told Abram to leave Ur and to travel to the land of Canaan.
They travelled to Haran, where they pitched tents.
One night God spoke to Abram;
“Travel to where I show you and I will make you into a great nation.”
Abram was seventy-five years old.
And his travels had only just begun.
At last they arrived in Canaan today known as Israel.
There God spoke to Abram;
“To your children and to their children, I will give this land.”
Then Abram built an altar, and sacrificed to the Lord.
In time the land suffered a famine.
So Abram travelled to Egypt.
Sarai was very beautiful, so Abram said to her, “Say you are my sister, or the Egyptians will kill me.”
Because of Sarai’s outstanding beauty, she was taken to the Pharaoh’s palace.
The Pharaoh planned to marry her.
So God began to send plagues upon the Pharaoh’s household.
The Pharaoh found out that Sarai was Abram’s wife and Abram was arrested.
“Abram why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?”
They were deported from Egypt
And journeyed north to Bethal.
Both Lot and Abram were very wealthy and there was fighting between their herdsmen.
So they divided the land and lived apart. Then the Lord spoke to Abram;
“Abram all the land you see, I will give to you and your children.”
War broke out in the land where Lot lived.
Lot was captured and they stole all of his possessions.
One of Lot’s men escaped and came to Abram with the news.
Abram armed over three hundred of his servants and went to battle.
He rescued Lot and recovered all of his goods.
Melchizedek, the High priest blessed Abram. Then the Word of God came to Abram in a vision;
“Abram your offspring shall be as many as the stars of the sky.”
But Abram was still without children so Sarai offered her maid Hagar.
However when Hagar became pregnant Sarai treated her so badly, she ran away.
The Angel of the Lord spoke to Hagar, “Return to Saria and call your son ‘Ishmael’, and your descendants will be many.”
Ishmael was born when Abram was eighty-six years old.
When Abram was ninety nine, God spoke to him;
“Abram change your name to ‘Abraham’, for you will be a father of many nations.
Your wife shall be called ‘Sarah’ and she shall be a mother of nations.”
One day the lord appeared to Abraham. It happened in this way: Abraham saw three men approaching.
He bowed down saying, “My lord if I have found favour in your sight, let me fetch you some refreshment.”
Then Abraham told Sarah to bake some cakes.
And a servant prepared a young calf in milk and butter.
One of the men said, “Your wife Sarah shall have a son.” Sarah heard this and laughed.
After this the three men went on their way.
God told Abraham, that he was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.
Because of their great wickedness.
Lot lived there, so Abraham pleaded with God.
So the Lord sent two angels, who took Lot his wife and his daughters to safety.
Then fire fell upon Sodom and Gomorrha.
Lot’s wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt.
Abraham watched as Sodom and Gomorrah were turned to ashes.
Then Abraham left the land.
When Abraham was one hundred years old Sarah gave birth to their son Isaac.
Sarah demanded, “Send Hagar away. Her son shall not be a heir with Isaac.” The Lord said to Abraham;
“Do as Sarah says, because from Isaac, your offspring shall be called forth and because Ishmael is your son, I will also
ake him a great nation.”
So it was that Abraham evicted Hagar and Ishmael.
In the wilderness with no food or water, Hagar thought they were both going to die.
Then God spoke to Hagar, “Fear not! I will make Ishmael into a great nation.”
God was with Ishmael, who grew up in the wilderness.
Then God spoke to Abraham, “Take Isaac up to the mountains and offer him as a sacrifice.”
Abraham spoke with Isaac.
The next day with two servants, they set off for the mountain.
When they arrived Abraham and Isaac travelled alone. Isaac asked;
“Father we have the wood for the fire, but where is the offering?”
Abraham, built an altar with Isaac as the offering. Just as Abraham was about to kill Isaac, an Angel shouted;
“Abraham! Abraham! Do nothing to your son, for I now know that you fear God.”
Then Abraham saw a ram caught in the bushes.
Together they sacrificed the ram and worshipped God. Then an Angel spoke;
“Because you have obeyed my voice, through your offspring, all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.”
After returning to the servants, together they journeyed home.
When Sarah died, Abraham purchased a field and buried her.
Abraham told his oldest servant to travel to his relatives and find a wife for Isaac.
The first girl they met was Rebekah, the granddaughter of Abraham’s brother.
They soon travelled back and Rebekah met Isaac.
For Isaac it was love at first sight.
Abraham’s life came to an end when he was one hundred and seventy five years old.
