INTRODUCTION
Some Bible scholars say that Job is a true story and chronologically is in the earliest part of the Bible. Whilst other Bible scholars say that Job is a play about the life of Israel and Judah set during the 70 year Babylonian captivity.
Job means “Persecuted One.” In the play Job represents Israel from the northern kingdom and Judah from the southern kingdom in Jerusalem, which in 586 B.C. was totally destroyed and the survivors were taken to Babylon as slaves for the 70 year captivity. They lost all of their livestock, businesses, servants and many of their family members were murdered.
The prophets Isaiah, Amos, Micah, Zephaniah, Habakkuk Joel and lastly Jeremiah, had previously prophesied the captivity and the destruction of Jerusalem and that eventually Israel and Judah would once again be restored as a nation. The point of the play was; would Israel and Judah curse God and die or would they trust that God would be true to His word and the house of Israel and Judah would again be restored as a nation? And the glory of the latter house would be greater than the former, as the prophets had prophesied!
The Old Testament is set out in three sections: Books of history; Genesis to Esther. Books of poetry; Job to the Song of Solomon. Then books of prophecy; Isaiah to Malachi. So the people, who were responsible for setting out the Bible as we have it today, put Job in the poetry section.
(FIRST SPEAKER)
PICTURE 01 Job was a perfect and upright man who feared God, and turned away from evil.
PICTURE 02 He had a large household with seven son’s, three daughters and many servants.
PICTURE 03 Job was the richest man in the whole land, and he owned much livestock.
PICTURE 04 Seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred oxen, and five hundred donkeys.
PICTURE 05 Thinking his children may have sinned and cursed God.
PICTURE 06 Job rose early and made an offering to the Lord, for each family member.
PICTURE 07 One day the angels and Satan presented themselves before the Lord, the Lord said to Satan;
PICTURE 08 “Where have you come from?” Satan replied;
PICTURE 09 “From roaming around on the earth.” Then the Lord said to Satan;
PICTURE 10 “Job is a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil.” Satan answered;
PICTURE 11 “Does Job fear God for nothing, you have protected him, and blessed the work of his hands.
PICTURE 12 But stretch out your hand against everything that he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” The Lord replied;
PICTURE 13 “Everything Job has you can have, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”
PICTURE 14 So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
PICTURE 15 A messenger came to Job saying; “Attackers have killed your servants and stolen your donkeys and oxon and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
PICTURE 16 Then a second messenger came to Job saying; “The fire of God fell from heaven, and burned the sheep and servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you.
PICTURE 17 Then a third messenger came to Job saying; Attackers stole your camels, killed your servants and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
PICTURE 18 Then a fourth messenger came to Job saying: “A tornado struck the four corners of the house, and it killed all of your sons and daughters, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” Then Job worshipped God saying;
PICTURE 19 “Naked I came from my mothers womb, and naked I shall return. The Lord has given, and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.” Satan said to God;
PICTURE 20 “Skin for skin, a man will give all that he has to save his own life, stretch out your hand, and strike his flesh and bone, and he will surely curse you to your face.” God replied;
PICTURE 21 “Very well he is in your hands, but you must spare his life.”
PICTURE 22 So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord;
PICTURE 23 And afflicted Job with painful sores, from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
PICTURE 24 Job cut his hair, and took some broken pottery to scratch himself.
PICTURE 25 Then his wife said to him, “Curse God and die.” Job replied;
PICTURE 26 “You speak as one of the foolish women speak, shall we accept good from God, but not trouble.”
PICTURE 27 Job’s friends came to comfort him and all three cried when they saw his distress.
PICTURE 28 They sat down with him for seven days and nights, and no one said a word, because they saw how great his suffering was.
FIRST SPEAKER: After seven days Job spoke saying;
PICTURE 29 SPEAKER FOR JOB: “Why did I not die at birth? Then I would have slept with kings who built palaces that now lie in ruins. The small and the great are there, and the servant is free from his master.”
PICTURE 30 “The thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me.”
FIRST SPEAKER: Then Job’s friend Eliphaz answered;
PICTURE 31 SPEAKER FOR ELIPHAZ: “Think how you have instructed many, your words have supported those who stumbled, but now trouble comes to you and you stumble.”
PICTURE 32 “But as for me I would seek God, happy is the man that Almighty God corrects.” Job replied;
PICTURE 33 SPEAKER FOR JOB: “A despairing man should have the kindness of his friends, but my friends are undependable. Show me where I have been wrong! What does your arguing prove? Is there any wickedness on my lips?”
PICTURE 34 “What is man that you examine him every morning, and test him every moment? If I have sinned, what have I done to you? Why have you made me your target?”
FIRST SPEAKER: Then Bildad answered;
PICTURE 35 SPEAKER FOR BILDAD: “How long will you speak these things? Your words are like wind. Does God pervert justice? Does God pervert judgement?”
PICTURE 36 “Such is the destiny of all who forget God; the hope of the godless perishes. God will not reject a blameless man, or strengthen the hands of the evil man.”
FIRST SPEAKER: Job replied;
PICTURE 37 SPEAKER FOR JOB: “How can a mortal man be righteous before God? God is profound in heart, and mighty in strength. When He passes me I cannot see Him, when He passes me I cannot perceive Him.”
PICTURE 38 “Since I am already found guilty, why should I struggle in vain? There is no umpire between us, who may lay his hand upon us both. Someone to remove God’s rod from me.”
PICTURE 39 “I hate my life, so I will complain freely; I will speak of the bitterness in my soul. I wish that I had perished.”
FIRST SPEAKER: Then Zophar answered;
PICTURE 40 SPEAKER FOR ZOPHAR: “Will your empty talk reduce men to silence, will no one rebuke you for what you have said? I wish that God would speak up against you.”
PICTURE 41 “If you would prepare your heart and lean towards him, if you put away the sin that is in your hand, and let no evil dwell in your house, then surely you could lift up your face without shame.”
FIRST SPEAKER: Job answered;
PICTURE 42 SPEAKER FOR JOB: “Truly, you are the only wise people, and wisdom will die with you! I have become a laughingstock to my friends, the one who called on God and God answered.”
PICTURE 43 “Though He slay me, yet I will trust Him, I will surely maintain my ways before His face. He shall also be my salvation, for no godless man could stand before Him.”
PICTURE 44 “I have heard to much, miserable comforters you all are. Surely even now my witness is in heaven.”
PICTURE 45 “I know that my redeemer lives, and in the end He will take His stand on the earth. After my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, I myself will see Him with my own eyes.”
PICTURE 46 FIRST SPEAKER: “So these three men stopped answering Job because he was righteous in his own eyes. Another young man that had joined them spoke out saying.”
PICTURE 47 SPEAKER FOR YOUNG MAN: “I am young in years and you are old, so I was fearful to give you my opinion, I thought age should speak, and the multitude of years should teach wisdom, but it is the spirit within a man, and the breath of the Almighty that gives him understanding.”
PICTURE 48 “Old men are not always wise, nor do the old always understand justice. Suffer me a little while, and I will show you that there is more to be said on God’s behalf.”
PICTURE 49 “Touching the Almighty we cannot find him out, He is excellent in power and in judgement, He will not afflict.”
FIRST SPEAKER: Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said;
PICTURE 50 SPEAKER FOR THE LORD: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the world? Who determined its measurements? On what were it’s foundations laid? Or who laid the cornerstone. Surely you know!”
PICTURE 51 “When the morning stars sang together, and the angels shouted for joy? Have the gates of death been made known to you? Have you understood the vast expanses of the earth?”
PICTURE 52 “Who gives food to the raven, when it’s young cry out to God?”
PICTURE 53 “Have you given the horse its strength? Do you clothe it’s neck with a flowing mane?”
PICTURE 54 “Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, and spread his wings towards the south in winter? Does the eagle soar at your command, and make its nest in an unreachable place?”
PICTURE 55 “The wings of an ostrich flap joyfully, she cares not that a stranger might trample on her eggs, for God did not give her wisdom, or a share of understanding.”
PICTURE 56
“Look now at the great dinosaur, which I made along with you, he eats grass like an ox. His tail swings like a cedar tree. His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are like bars of iron.”
FIRST SPEAKER: Then Job answered the Lord saying;
PICTURE 57
SPEAKER FOR JOB: “I know you can do everything, and no plan of yours can be withheld, you asked who is this that gives counsel without wisdom. I have spoken of things that I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.”
FIRST SPEAKER: Then the Lord spoke to Job’s friends;
PICTURE 58 SPEAKER FOR THE LORD: “My anger is against you, for you have not spoken of me what is right as my servant Job has. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your foolishness.”
PICTURE 59 FIRST SPEAKER: After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his prosperity, giving him twice as much as he had before.
PICTURE 60 So the Lord blessed the later days of Job more than his early days. He was the wealthiest man in the land. Job lived for one hundred and forty years, and then died.
